Passez la monnaie !

Il fut une époque où l'on ne s'aquittait pas de droits d'entrées dans les bals musette, mais plutôt d'un droit de danser, sous forme de jetons de danse.

Dans sa biographie Titi des Enfants Rouges, Léon Agel (batteur puis éditeur) en explique le fonctionnement :
"Celui que je préférais était l'As de coeur, rue des Vertus, c'était le vrai musette. On payait sa consommation trois francs et vingt-cinq centimes pour chaque danse que l'on faisait.

L'orchestre attaquait refrain, couplet et refrain, les ramasseurs munis de sacoches encerclaient les danseurs, à l'aide d'une corde et criaient : "passons la monnaie". L'opération terminée ils se retiraient sur les côtés en criant "Roulez".

Il n'y avait pas moyen de passer au travers. Il fallait donner ses cinq sous ou un jeton acheté à la caisse. Si l'on se réfère à un article d'Emmanuel Patrick, publié en 1886, cette pratique avait été innovée, à cette époque, dans un petit bal de la rue de Charenton. Un violoneux faisait danser et sa femme ramassait les pièces de deux sous en criant "Passons la monnaie" à la moitié de la danse , puis "Roulez" pour la reprise. La musique reprenait le même air ; refrain, couplet, refrain ou simplement : couplet, refrain.

A l'As, cela revenait cher mais l'ambiance était formidable."

L'expression "Roulez jeunesse", encore fréquemment utilisée aujourd'hui, est vraisemblablement issue de cette pratique.

L'utilisation des jetons de danse a disparu avec la seconde guerre mondiale.
